[UBD/IAS/001] International Relations / Politics

Associate Professor | Senior Assistant Professor | Assistant Professor

The Institute of Asian Studies (IAS) at the Universiti Brunei Darussalam is in a phase of active expansion. This has created an opening for an International Relations / Politics position. The appointment will begin in August 2019. Candidates with knowledge and interest in the South China Sea area, Southeast Asia (ASEAN) and regional integration are particularly welcome. Preference will be given to applicants who demonstrate eagerness to take part in discussions and contribute in any of the IAS Research Clusters: 1. Asian Imaginaries: Narratives, Texts and Context, 2. Asian Diaspora and Migration, 3. Borneo in Transition: Bio-culture, Heritage and Tourism.

The successful candidate will contribute to both the Institute and Faculty Arts and Social Sciences in terms of research, supervision and some teaching responsibilities at both undergraduate and graduate levels. Candidates should have a PhD related to the field, such as Political Science, International Relations, or Security Studies. Candidates should have a demonstrable record of excellence in research internationally and a proven capacity to initiate, lead and collaborate on research projects. The Institute has established ties with a number of universities and other key bodies globally alongside funding for research and graduate students. The aim is to establish IAS as a major knowledge hub in a growing network of Asian-based research establishments. Successful applicants will be eligible for UBD’s new internationally competitive and tax-free salary scheme.

[UBD/IAS/002] East Asian Studies

Associate Professor | Senior Assistant Professor | Assistant Professor

The Institute of Asian Studies (IAS) at the Universiti of Brunei Darussalam is seeking to hire a scholar of the humanities or social sciences with expertise in East Asia. The appointment will begin in August 2019. A Ph.D. in Sociology, Anthropology, History, Geography, Economics, or a related social-science discipline is required prior to start of appointment. Rank offered is Assistant Professor, Senior Assistant Professor or Associate Professor. Area of specialization is includes, but is not limited to cultural studies, religious studies, international relations, language and culture, trans-Asian studies and globalization. Preference will be given to applicants who demonstrate eagerness to take part in a multi-disciplinary conversation about issues in trans-Asian contexts, and who have a vision for Asian Studies in the 21st century.
